St. Mary's Upends Stevenson in Double Overtime

Box Score

Owings Mills, Md. – First-year defender Pierre Zibi (Silver Spring, Md./DeMatha Catholic) netted the game-winning goal just a minute into the start of the second overtime period to help the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team hand host Stevenson University its first loss of the season.

Junior midfielder Brian Payne (Catonsville, Md./Calvert Hall) sent in a cross from the left wing to Zibi who put it in at the near post from 6 yards out at 101:00 to stun Stevenson in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The Seahawks played a controlled game from start to finish, claiming an early 1-0 lead at 30:35 as junior defender Taylor Lewis (Upper Marlboro, Md./Leonardtown) headed in junior captain J.T. Bowers' (Columbia, Md./River Hill) cross from the left wing.

The reigning CAC Rookie of the Year, sophomore Ansger Otto (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro), gave Stevenson (6-1, 0-1 CAC) a 2-1 advantage at halftime as Otto notched two goals in a seven-minute span.

Senior forward Nick Ibello (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall) evened up the score at 59:01 as Ibello stuck back the rebound from Bowers' shot.

Each team had a shot in the first overtime period while Stevenson, who is ranked seventh in the South Atlantic region, could not convert on two corner kick opportunities.

St. Mary's outshot the Mustangs, 24-16, while Stevenson held a 6-0 margin in corner kicks.

Senior goalie Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) came up with four saves while junior Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) had six stops for Stevenson.

The Seahawks look to pick up win #3 on Wednesday, September 22 when they travel to Fredericksburg, Va. to take on University of Mary Washington, who is ranked ninth in the South Atlantic region, in another CAC tilt at 4:00 pm.
