game-winning goal just a minute into the start of the second
overtime period to help the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's
soccer team hand host Stevenson University its first loss of the
season.
Junior midfielder Brian Payne
(Catonsville, Md./Calvert Hall) sent in a cross from the left wing
to Zibi who put it in at the near post from 6
yards out at 101:00 to stun Stevenson in the Capital Athletic
Conference opener for both teams.
The Seahawks played a controlled game from start to finish,
claiming an early 1-0 lead at 30:35 as junior defender Taylor
Lewis (Upper Marlboro, Md./Leonardtown) headed in
junior captain J.T. Bowers'
(Columbia, Md./River Hill) cross from the left wing.
The reigning CAC Rookie of the Year, sophomore Ansger
Otto (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro), gave Stevenson (6-1,
0-1 CAC) a 2-1 advantage at halftime as Otto
notched two goals in a seven-minute span.
Senior forward Nick Ibello
(Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall) evened up the score at 59:01 as
Ibello stuck back the rebound from
Bowers' shot.
Each team had a shot in the first overtime period while
Stevenson, who is ranked seventh in the South Atlantic region,
could not convert on two corner kick opportunities.
St. Mary's outshot the Mustangs, 24-16, while Stevenson held a
6-0 margin in corner kicks.
Senior goalie Paul
Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) came up with
four saves while junior Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex,
N.J./Middlesex) had six stops for Stevenson.
The Seahawks look to pick up win #3 on Wednesday, September 22
when they travel to Fredericksburg, Va. to take on University of
Mary Washington, who is ranked ninth in the South Atlantic region,
in another CAC tilt at 4:00 pm.
