Owings Mills, Md. – A goal in each half
propelled the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team to
their first victory of the 2010 season as the Seahawks posted a 2-0
shutout of host Stevenson University Saturday afternoon, marking
the Capital Athletic Conference opener for St. Mary's.
Today's win at Stevenson is the first time that the Seahawks
have won on the Mustangs' home field in head coach Brianne
Weaver's five-year tenure. St. Mary's was 0-for-2
under Weaver until today.
Sophomore forward Tori Eskay
(Damascus, Md./Urbana) gave the Seahawks (1-2-1, 1-0 CAC) a 1-0
first half lead as Eskay corralled a loose ball at
the top of the box with her back towards goal, then turned and
fired to beat the reigning CAC Defensive Player of the Week, junior
goalie Brittany Ross (Millersville, Md./Severna
Park) at 31:37.
St. Mary's second goal after the break when senior defender
Taylor
Colonna (Kingsville, Md./Perry Hall) collected a
through ball and then gave a short pass to sophomore forward
Kim
LaBarge (Gambrills, Md./South River) who scored from
10 yards out a 71:30.
The Mustangs (3-4, 1-1 CAC) found it tough to penetrate
first-year Kelsey Wirtz
(Parkton, Md./Hereford) who registered her first career shutout as
a Seahawk, making a season-high seven stops.
Ross and sophomore Lauren
Weitzman (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) each gave up a
goal while Ross had a pair of saves.
The Seahawks hope to continue their winning ways on Wednesday,
September 22 when they host No. 8 Johns Hopkins University in
non-conference action at 4:00 pm at Seahawk Stadium.
