Fredericksburg, Va. – Despite strong play
on the field, the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team
was unable to avoid a 2-0 loss to University of Mary Washington in
Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday afternoon.
Most of the action for the first half was in the midfield as
only one corner kick was given up and just a total of six shots (4
for Mary Washington) were taken for a scoreless draw at
halftime.
Mary Washington (6-0-1, 2-0 CAC), who is ranked fifth in the
South Atlantic region, finally broke through in the 53rd minute
when junior midfielder Bram Sims (Boston,
Va./Culpeper) finished off a pass from senior midfielder
Ryan Taibl (Centreville, Va./Westfield).
The Eagles went up 2-0 at 61:49 when senior forward T.L.
Tutor (Islesboro, Maine/Gould Academy) scored an
unassisted goal for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Mary Washington edged the visitors in shots, 8-6, and corner
kicks, 1-0.
Defenders Greg Primiano
(Barrington, R.I./Barrington) and Mike
Warburton (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and junior
midfielder Brian Payne
(Catonsville, Md./Calvert Hall) notched the Seahawks' three shots
on goal.
The Seahawks look to rebound this Saturday, September 25 when
they entertain York (Pa.) College, who is tied for sixth in the
South Atlantic region, in another league tilt at 3:30 pm.
