York, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of
Maryland volleyball team split their opening matches on the first
day of the Spartan Best Western Westgate Invitational hosted by
York (Pa.) College Friday night.
The Seahawks (8-5) started the evening with a 3-0 sweep of Rowan
University (6-2), dominating the Profs, 25-13, 25-12, 25-12.
St. Mary's was basically impenetrable as first-years Trish
Kallis (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Michelle
Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) combined for
14.0 of the team's 18.0 total blocks.
Kallis paced the squad with a team-high seven
kills while adding six solo blocks and one block assist.
Klima finished the match with a team-high seven
solo blocks and one block assist while chipping in five kills and
two digs. Senior outside hitter Claire Kodan
(Olney, Md./Sherwood) and first-year libero Bianca
Livioco (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) helped
out offensively with three service aces apiece.
St. Mary's closed out the evening with a 3-0 setback to Virginia
Wesleyan College (10-2), playing the Marlins tight in the first set
before falling 22-25, 16-25, 17-25. Klima
and Kodan led the attack with nine kills each
while Kodan added a team-best 10 digs.
The Seahawks return to action tomorrow as they conclude
competition at the Spartan Best Western Westgate
Invitational. St. Mary's will open up with Muhlenberg College
and then depending on its standing in Pool B will play again either
at 2:00 or 4:00 pm.
