York, Pa. – With a pair of wins on the
day, the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team finished
third at the Spartan Best Western Westgate Invitational hosted by
York (Pa.) College Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks were
third in the eight-team field.
St. Mary's (10-5) commenced Saturday with a 3-0 shutout of
Muhlenberg College (1-11) with scores of 25-13, 25-17, 25-12.
Senior outside hitter Claire Kodan
(Olney, Md./Sherwood) and junior middle blocker Gena
Hlavinka (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton) paced the
Seahawks with seven kills each while first-year middle blocker
Trish
Kallis (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) added five
kills and four solo blocks.
The Seahawks had a much tougher fight in their third-place match
with Carnegie Mellon University (9-8). St. Mary's jumped out
to a 2-0 lead with scores of 25-21, 25-15 before the Tartans
answered back with 25-18, 25-23 wins in the third and fourth sets,
respectively. The Seahawks claimed the match win with a 15-10
triumph in the deciding set.
Four Seahawks finished with double-digit kills as
Kodan led the way with 14 while
Hlavinka and first-year Michelle Klima
(Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) each tallied 13 kills.
First-year outside hitter Jenna
Campbell (Brookeville, Md./Good Counsel) rounded out
the foursome with her first career double-double on 10 kills and 11
digs.
Defensively, first-year libero Bianca
Livioco (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) notched
a team-high 16 digs while senior setter Katie Obal
(Olney, Md./Sherwood) dished 46 assists, had nine digs and served
up three aces.
The Seahawks open up next week with two Capital Athletic
Conference matches as they first travel to Frederick, Maryland to
take on Hood College on Tuesday, September 28 at 7:00 pm before
hosting league rival, York, on Thursday at 7:00 pm.
