St. Mary's City, Md. – The St.
Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team played
to a 1-1 draw in their home-opener against McDaniel College Friday
afternoon in non-conference action.
Both goals came within the first 10 minutes of the contest
before the teams settled into a groove for the next 100 minutes of
play.
McDaniel (0-1) struck first as the Green Terror capitalized on a
misplayed ball by the Seahawk defense. Sophomore forward
Hilary Hanus (Hockessin, Del./Cab Calloway School
of the Arts) easily scored on the open net at 2:49.
Sophomore forward Tori Eskay (Damascus,
Md./Urbana) evened up the score nearly seven minutes later as
Eskay ran up the right side and then once inside
box, she was able to chip it just inside the far post at hip level
at 9:39.
In the second half, the Seahawks, who outshot McDaniel, 42-8,
for the match, dominated possession with a 15-3 shot advantage but
were unable to penetrate first-year goalie Jan
Woolley (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) as Woolley
finished the contest with 20 saves.
The overtime periods were much of the same with St. Mary's
controlling the ball; however, the Seahawks had a chance to win it
in the final four minutes of the second overtime period with a
flurry of shots in a span of 1:43, firing off five shots and
earning a corner kick. Woolley saved one
while the Green Terror defense knocked two out of play, one hit the
post and another went wide.
St. Mary's edged the Green Terror in corner kicks, 8-5,
including a 3-1 advantage in the second overtime period.
First-year Shelby Perkins (Forest Hill,
Md./Notre Dame Prep) started in goal for St. Mary's while
first-year Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford)
finished the first half and started the second before making way
for first-year Allison Griffin (Dayton, Md./River
Hill). Wirtz and Griffin
each made two saves.
