St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior midfielder Brian Payne (Catonsville, Md./Calvert Hall College) netted the equalizer for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team but it was not enough as Stevenson University pulled out a 2-1 Capital Athletic Conference victory Saturday afternoon.
St. Mary's (5-5, 1-2 CAC) was dominant in its offensive end, taking 17 shots, but having only two fall on frame, and collecting four corner kicks to Stevenson's zero.
Stevenson (5-5-1, 1-2-0 CAC) opened up the scoring at 16:30 as sophomore forward Marcus Green (Rosedale, Md./Overlea) received a pass from senior midfielder Ryan Brost (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley) then dribbled the ball up the right side before finishing with a shot to the lower left corner.
Payne responded for the Seahawks in the 36th minute with his first goal of the season as he sent a loose ball into the back of the net for a 1-1 draw heading into halftime.
Green found the back of the net once again in the 55th minute for the eventual game-winner as he headed in a ball at the far post following a feed from first-year forward Andrew Garner (Owings, Md./Northern).
Seahawk sophomore goalkeeper Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) finished with three saves on eight shots faced (five on goal).
St. Mary's will be back in action on Wednesday, October 5, taking on No. 3 Christopher Newport University (7-0-1) in non-conference action at 1:30 pm in Seahawk Stadium.
