St. Mary's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team notched its second straight win with a 3-0 sweep of Hood College in Capital Athletic Conference action before dropping a 3-0 non-conference decision to Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon.

St. Mary's (5-13, 2-3 CAC) opened up the first set with Hood with a 3-0 run and built that lead to 10-5 on a kill by senior middle blocker Gena Hlavinka (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton).  The Blazers closed the gap to 23-20 but back-to-back kills from sophomore Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) ensured a 25-20 win for the Seahawks.

In the second set, St. Mary's cruised to a 25-9 triumph as the Seahawks went on a 17-7 tear to start the game and never relinquished the lead.  Junior outside hitter Cecilia Blanc (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) notched five kills, five digs and three service aces in the second set victory.

Hood (5-8, 1-3 CAC) kept it closer in the final game but the Seahawks used a 9-0 run to seize control of the set en route to a 25-18 win.

Blanc led the way against Hood with match-bests of 21 digs, eight kills and four aces while sophomore setters Elaina Straub (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) and Rachel Wilson (Damascus, Md./Damascus) had 15 and 13 assists, respectively.

In the match against Gettysburg (12-6), Hlavinka paced the team with seven kills and four block assists while junior outside hitter Jenn Rindone (Crofton, Md./Spalding) contributed a match-best 17 digs plus five kills.  Wilson added 14 assists, nine digs and one kill.

Five consecutive attack errors by the Seahawks in the first set allowed Gettysburg to jump out an early 7-2 advantage – a lead that the Bullets never relinquished.  St. Mary's overcame a 20-10 deficit with a 10-2 run but Gettysburg held on for a 25-21 win in the first set.

The second set featured four tied scores and four lead changes early on but Gettysburg broke open a 5-5 draw with a 16-7 run en route to a 25-16 victory.  The Bullets secured a 25-19 win in the third set for the match win.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Tuesday, October 4 as St. Mary's travels to Washington, D.C. to take on Gallaudet University in non-conference action at 7:00 pm.
