St. Mary's Men's Soccer Shocks Mary Washington

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team notched their first win over the University of Mary Washington since 1981 Tuesday afternoon as the Seahawks tallied a 3-0 victory against the Capital Athletic Conference frontrunner.

The Seahawks (6-7, 2-3 CAC) picked up just the program's third win over Mary Washington (5-5-2, 3-1-1 CAC) in 40 meetings, handing the Eagles their first conference loss of the season and halting their four-game unbeaten streak.  The victory snapped St. Mary's current four-game skid as well as its seven-game losing streak versus Mary Washington.

Senior forward Mark Jaskolski (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest) put the Seahawks on the board first as Jaskolski collected a pass from the right from junior midfielder Frank VanGessel (Delmar, Del./Delmar), turned and shot for a 1-0 lead at 10:48.  St. Mary's defense played tough for the rest of the half and four saves from sophomore Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) preserved the one-goal margin for halftime.

St. Mary's started the second stanza firing right out of the gates as senior midfielder Brian Payne (Catonsville, Md./Calvert Hall College) chipped the ball over the Eagles' 6-3 keeper, first-year Tyler Back (Falls Church, Va./George Mason), just four minutes in for a two-goal cushion.

First-year forward Matthew Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) netted the insurance goal in the 73rd minute as Braun fired a laser from the top of the box just inside post after receiving a left-to-right pass from sophomore defender Mike Warburton (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill).

The Seahawks frustrated Mary Washington from the start as St. Mary's continually pushed the ball forward, taking 18 shots to the Eagles' 11.  The home team doubled up on corner kicks as well, 4-2, while Brown finished the game with five saves.

St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday, October 15 when the Seahawks travel to Dover, Delaware for a Capital Athletic Conference match against Wesley College at 5:00 pm.
