York Slips Past St. Mary's Field Hockey

Box Score

York, Pa. – York College of Pennsylvania tallied the game-winning goal with 1:53 remaining in regulation to post a 3-2 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team Saturday afternoon.

York (8-7, 2-3 CAC) claimed a 2-0 first half lead as the Spartans scored a pair in a two-minute span in the first 10 minutes of the game.  Forwards Liz Maue (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) and Madi Wilt (Harwood, Md./Kent Island) both found the back of the cage at 6:35 and 8:40, respectively.

The Spartans held a 6-0 margin in penalty corners in the first stanza, managing four shots in the first 35 minutes while St. Mary's (5-8, 3-2 CAC) took three and had two turned away by junior goalkeeper Lydia Pirie (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven).

First-year forward Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) notched an unassisted goal nearly four minutes into the second half to finally get the Seahawks on the board and cut York's lead to one.

St. Mary's evened up the score at 2-2 at 66:43 as junior defender Ali McIntosh (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) inserted the ball to senior midfielder Sam Locke (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Locke finished for her first goal of the season.

The home team responded less than two minutes later with the eventual game-winner as Maue struck for her second goal of the afternoon.

Following York's third goal, the Seahawks had an opportunity to tie up the game one more time, earning a penalty corner at 69:22.  Senior midfielder Susan Smith (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's County) inserted the ball to Locke but Locke's shot was denied by Pirie and time expired.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ana Wash (Yorktown, Va./York) started the game for the Seahawks and played the entire first half while first-year Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) started the second half and made four saves.

St. Mary's will be back in action on Tuesday, October 18 when the Seahawks welcome No. 18 University of Mary Washington to Seahawk Stadium for another key conference match-up at 4:00 pm.
