St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior midfielder Brian Payne (Catonsville, Md./Calvert Hall) prevented Marymount (Va.) University from spoiling Senior Day as Payne netted the game-winning goal in the 75th minute for a 1-0 Seahawk win over Marymount in an important Capital Athletic Conference battle Saturday afternoon.
First-year midfielder Tommy Krug (Columbia, Md./River Hill) slotted a pass from the top of the box to Payne who collected the ball, turned and fired into the left side of the goal for the eventual game-winning goal at 74:37.
Marymount (4-9-3, 1-4-2 CAC) had a solid opportunity to even up the score in the 85th minute when senior defender Matt Grady (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) took down Saint senior midfielder Kjell Crooke (Vienna, Va./James Madison) inside the penalty box, giving Marymount a penalty kick. However, Crooke shot the ball just over the crossbar and St. Mary's held on for the 1-0 victory.
With the win, the Seahawks now have nine points (3 points for a win) and are tied with Stevenson University and York College of Pennsylvania for fifth in the conference standings. The CAC regular-season wraps up on October 26.
St. Mary's (7-8, 3-4 CAC) outshot the Saints, 19-8, while corner kicks were equal at three apiece.
Sophomore goalkeeper Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) finished the game with four stops for his seventh win in goal.
Before the contest got underway today, Aaron Lewis (Fulton, Md./SSFS), Will Bone (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown), J.T. Bowers (Columbia, Md./River Hill), Grady, Payne, Ted Scharfenberg (Holbrook, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), Mark Jaskolski (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest), Chris Quamina (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. St. Joseph), Drew Gainey (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon), and Misha Simon (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) were recognized for their years of service to the Seahawk men's soccer program.
