Two Decker Goals Give St. Mary's Field Hockey Win on Senior Day

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – First-year forward Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) struck twice as the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey posted a 3-1 Capital Athletic Conference win over Wesley College Saturday afternoon to give the five Seahawk seniors a proper sendoff.

The win kept St. Mary's (6-9, 4-3 CAC) at fourth in the conference standings with one CAC regular-season match-up remaining between York College of Pennsylvania and Hood College on October 25.  If York defeats Hood in that October 25th contest, then York will clinch the No. 4 seed in the upcoming CAC tournament and host St. Mary's in first round action on October 30.  However, if Hood were to win, the Seahawks would claim the fourth seed and host York in the first round.

Junior forward Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) started the scoring for the Seahawks with an unassisted goal just 1:10 into the game as Parker put back the rebound off the goalie's pads from her initial shot.

It remained a 1-0 Seahawk lead for most of the first half until Decker collected her first goal of the afternoon with 23.4 seconds remaining in the half as she fired a shot from seven yards out into the left corner.

The score was steady at 2-0 in favor of St. Mary's until the final nine minutes of the game.  Decker picked up her second of the day at 61:02 as she put in a loose ball going across the cage.

Wesley (10-8, 5-2 CAC) avoided the shutout loss when junior Hannah Wilson (Dover, Del./Dover) inserted the ball to junior midfielder Jessica Franklin (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) and Franklin ripped a shot from the top of the circle that hit off the right post and ricocheted in for the score at 62:00.

The St. Mary's defense was solid this afternoon as the Seahawks turned away 20 Wesley penalty corners and sophomore goalkeeper Ana Wash (Yorktown, Va./York) recorded six stops for her third win of the season.

Before the contest got underway today, Lauren Bennett (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson), Sam Locke (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), Kelsey McKeon (Street, Md./North Harford), Jackie Reymann (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville), and Susan Smith (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's County) were recognized for their years of service to the Seahawk field hockey program.  The Seahawks have amassed a four-year record of 33-32, including a conference mark of 17-9, with these seniors.  They helped St. Mary's advance to the league tournament championship game in 2008 while leading the program to its first-ever national ranking following a 6-0 start to the 2010 season.

St. Mary's will be back in action on Tuesday, October 25 when the Seahawks travel to Winchester, Virginia to take on Shenandoah University in the regular-season finale at 4:00 pm.
