Box Score Winchester, Va. – Shenandoah University needed just a goal in each half to collect a 2-0 non-conference victory over the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team Tuesday afternoon in the regular-season finale for both squads.
The Hornets (5-13) struck first at 15:14 as sophomore forward Liz Grover (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) found the back of the cage off an assist from senior midfielder Megan Garrett (Reisterstown, Md./North Carroll). Shenandoah would not score again until 50 minutes later when junior Maria Payne (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) picked up her second goal of the season.
St. Mary's (6-10) struggled offensively despite taking 18 shots. Senior midfielder Susan Smith (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's County) and junior forward Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) paced the Seahawk offense with five shots each.
The Seahawks outshot Shenandoah, 18-6, while holding an 11-7 advantage in penalty corners.
St. Mary's will now shift its focus to the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Field Hockey Championship Tournament which begins October 30 with first round action. With York College of Pennsylvania's 5-0 win over Hood College on Tuesday, the Seahawks finished as the fifth seed in the playoffs and will travel to No. 4 seed York for a first round game on Sunday. Game time will be announced later this week.
