Seahawk Volleyball Splits on Final Day of Seahawk Invitational

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team ended their Seventh Annual Seahawk Invitational by splitting their two matches Saturday afternoon.  The Seahawks posted a 3-0 shutout win over Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference action before dropping a 3-0 decision to Lynchburg College.

Prior to the Wesley match, the Seahawks recognized their three seniors – outside hitter Shannon Fitzpatrick (Germantown, Md./St. John's College), middle blocker Gena Hlavinka (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton), and defensive specialist Kasey Stanton (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson).  These senior have notched a four-year record of 77-48, including a league mark of 20-12.  Their leadership guided the Seahawks to the program's second appearance in the CAC championship match in 2008 with the program's best-ever CAC record of 7-1.  St. Mary's also enjoyed three consecutive winning seasons between 2008 and 2010.

Juniors Cecilia Blanc (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) and Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown) paced the Seahawks (10-17, 4-4 CAC) in their win over Wesley (5-25, 0-8 CAC), securing the fifth seed in the 2001 CAC Volleyball Championship Tournament which begins on November 1 with first round action.

Blanc and Mullennix each tallied nine kills while Stanton collected a career-best 22 digs in St. Mary's 25-16, 25-12, 25-15 victories.  Junior outside hitter Jenn Rindone (Crofton, Md./Spalding) and Blanc also contributed double-digit digs with 15 and 13, respectively.

Sophomore setters Elaina Straub (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) and Rachel Wilson (Damascus, Md./Damascus) combined for 28 assists in the win.

Lynchburg (20-9) picked up its 3-0 non-conference win with scores of 25-15, 25-20, 25-21.  Middle blockers Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Gena Hlavinka (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton) led the Seahawk attack in the loss with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.  This is Klima's third 11-kill effort in five matches.

Defensively, sophomore libero Bianca Livioco (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) led the way with 19 digs while Blanc had 11 digs.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Tuesday, November 1 as St. Mary's travels to Fredericksburg, Virginia to take on No. 4 seed University of Mary Washington (16-14) in CAC first round action at 7:00 pm.
