St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior midfielder Brian Payne (Catonsville, Md./Calvert Hall College) picked up his second goal in as many games as Payne netted the lone goal for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team in their 4-1 defeat to No. 3 Christopher Newport University in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.
Christopher Newport (9-0-1), who is first in the South Atlantic region, claimed a 1-0 halftime lead as first-year Jalon Brown (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) collected an unassisted goal in the 6th minute.
The Captains increased their lead to 2-0 in the 56th minute before Payne responded for St. Mary's (5-6) by converting a penalty kick in the 63rd minute following a handball call in the box.
CNU tacked on two more tallies in the 66th and 73rd minutes, including Brown scoring his second of the day on a penalty kick.
The Captains outshot St. Mary's, 22-8, while posting an 8-3 margin in corner kicks. In goal, sophomore Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) finished with four saves in the Seahawk loss.
St. Mary's hopes to snap its three-game skid on Saturday, October 8 when the Seahawks travel to York College of Pennsylvania (3-5-3) for a Capital Athletic Conference match at 2:00 pm.
