Box Score Frostburg, Md. – Sophomore midfielder Rachel Heiss (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) and first-year forward Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) helped the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team improve to 3-1 in Capital Athletic Conference action as the Seahawks posted a 2-0 victory over Frostburg State University Saturday afternoon.
Decker started the scoring for the Seahawks (5-6, 3-1 CAC) at 28:42 as she finished off a pass from sophomore midfielder Claire Kortyna (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland). St. Mary's held on for the 1-0 halftime lead as sophomore goalkeeper Ana Wash (Yorktown, Va./York) turned away three of Frostburg State's seven first-half shots.
Heiss gave St. Mary's a two-goal cushion in the 55th minute with an unassisted goal for her first goal of the season. The Seahawk defense did their part in the second stanza, holding the host Bobcats to just one shot.
The Seahawks tallied a 26-8 shot advantage as well as a 14-7 margin in penalty corners. Wash finished the game with her three first-half saves for her first career shutout.
St. Mary's will look to continue its winning ways on Monday, October 10 when the Seahawks welcome #14 Catholic University of America (9-1) for non-conference action at 2:00 pm.
