Seahawk Women's Basketball Falls at Delaware Valley in Season-Opener

Box Score

Doylestown, Pa. – Forwards Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and Joanna Murray (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) each scored in double figures for the St. Mary's College of Maryland but the Seahawks came up short in their season-opener to host Delaware Valley College, 68-43, Tuesday night in the St. Mary's coaching debut of first-year head coach Crystal Gibson.

Lewis tallied 11 points and added three rebounds while Murray picked up 10 points as she connected on the Seahawks' three long-range shots.  Sophomore Marché Pearson (Laurel, Md./Laurel) grabbed a game-best nine rebounds, including seven defensive boards, while sophomore guard Aura Payne (Glen Burnie, Md./Severn School) collected a career-and game-best six steals.

The Seahawks (0-1) fell behind early to the Delaware Valley Aggies as a 1-of-11 effort from the floor allowed Delaware to post a 15-5 lead with 11:48 remaining in the half.  The Aggies' biggest lead of the half, however, came at the 5:53 mark when a three-point play by junior Emily Soper (Selinsgrove, Pa.) gave her team a 12-point advantage.

St. Mary's rallied in the final six minutes of the first stanza with an 11-3 run to close the gap to 26-22 with 1:13 left.  The Seahawks headed into intermission with a 29-22 deficit following a three-point shot by senior guard Brittany Battinieri (Brookhaven, Pa.) at the four-second mark.  Murray paced the Seahawks in the half with her 10 points.

Delaware Valley (1-0) pulled away from the Seahawks in the second half, using a 17-4 run to start the half and establish a 20-point lead which the Aggies never relinquished.  Delaware Valley finished the game shooting 46.2% from the floor after making 56.5% of its shots in the second stanza.

Coach Gibson and the St. Mary's Seahawks will look to notch their first win of the 2011-12 campaign on Friday, November 18 as St. Mary's kicks off its Cherry Cove Seahawk Tip-Off Tournament.  The Seahawks will take on New Jersey City University at 5:00 pm while the other half of the tournament features Cabrini College and No. 15/17 Greensboro College at 7:00 pm.
