Eskay, Latour Lead Seahawk Women's Soccer to Third Shutout Win

Box Score

Ashland, Va. – Junior forward Tori Eskay (Damascus, Md./Urbana) and sophomore midfielder Yvonne Latour (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) each found the back of the net as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team remained undefeated on the young season with a 2-0 shutout of regionally-ranked Gettysburg College Saturday afternoon.

St. Mary's (3-0) has started the 2011 campaign on solid ground with three consecutive shutouts and today's win over Gettysburg (1-2) was only the second victory against the Bullets in the two teams' eight meetings.  The Seahawks' last triumph over GC came on September 20, 1990.

Prior to the start of the contest, both teams gathered around a red, white, and blue version of the Seahawk to observe a moment of silence in honor of those who lost their lives on 9-11-01.

Latour commenced the scoring in the 24th minute as her free kick from about five yards outside the box rifled in and deflected in off a Gettysburg defender.

A little bit over 10 minutes later, St. Mary's owned a 2-0 lead as junior midfielder Liza Sitz (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) sent in a slot pass to the far post and Eskay ran onto it to one-time it in at 33:28.

St. Mary's and Gettysburg Observe Moment of Silence Gettysburg, who is ranked ninth in the Mid-Atlantic region, dominated the second half, owning a 13-3 shot advantage and 5-0 corner kick margin, but the Bullets struggled to finish their attacks and sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) stood up to the challenge with five second half saves.

The Bullets finished the game with an 18-9 shot advantage and 7-1 corner kick margin.

Wirtz picked up her third shutout of the season by matching her career-best with nine total saves.

The Seahawks return to action on Wednesday, September 14 when St. Mary's travels to Carlisle, Pa. for non-conference action against No. 19 Dickinson College at 5:00 pm.
