Johns Hopkins Slips Past St. Mary's Men's Soccer

St. Mary's City, Md. – A goal in each half helped Johns Hopkins University to a 2-1 non-conference victory over the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team Wednesday afternoon, snapping the Seahawks' four-game win streak.

The first half seemed headed into a scoreless draw at halftime before Johns Hopkins' first-year midfielder Kotaro Mitsuhashi (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) slipped a pass to first-year Matt Carey (Seaford, Del./Worcester Prep) on the right wing.  Carey then fired off a shot just outside the box into the middle of the goal at 42:53.

Senior midfielder Sean Coleman (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) gave Hopkins (2-2-1) a 2-0 lead at 56:22 as Coleman dribbled up the right side and then rifled in a shot towards the far side of the goal, past a diving sophomore goalkeeper Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's).

St. Mary's (4-1), who is ranked fourth in the South Atlantic region, avoided the shutout as senior midfielder Chris Quamina (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) dropped a pass back to first-year midfielder Stephen Hauschild (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) who blasted a shot into the lower right corner to cut the deficit to one at 68:04.

Hopkins continued to possess the ball with strong play in the midfield and was able to hold off the Seahawk rally, halting its two-game losing skid with today's win.

The Blue Jay outshot St. Mary's, 26-14, and held a 5-4 margin in corner kicks.  Brown recorded nine stops for the Seahawks as he saw his 402:53-minute scoreless streak come to an end.

St. Mary's will look to bounce back on Saturday, September 17 as the Seahawks open up Capital Athletic Conference action at Frostburg State University (2-0-1).  Kickoff is at 5:00 pm.
