St. Mary's City, Md. – Five different players scored as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer started the 2011 season with a 5-0 shutout of McDaniel College in non-conference action Friday afternoon.
The Seahawks (1-0) claimed a 2-0 halftime lead behind goals from sophomore midfielder Yvonne Latour (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) and senior forward Bridget McGovern (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip Regional).
Latour's unassisted goal came at 23:53 as she dribbled up the middle into the box past a couple McDaniel defenders before flicking the ball into the lower right corner. McGovern gave St. Mary's a 2-0 boost as she chipped the ball into the top right corner from the left side of the box at 32:28.
Sophomore forward Jo Rambo (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) continued the scoring for the Seahawks at 57:16 as Rambo one-timed a pass from sophomore defender Colleen McDougall (Solomons, Md./Patuxent) into the center of the net.
The Seahawks established a 4-0 cushion as junior forward Tori Eskay (Damascus, Md./Urbana) fired the ball into the left corner. Junior midfielder Liza Sitz (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) rounded out the scoring for St. Mary's as Sitz took a cross from fellow classmate Jaci Auletto (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) and flicked it into the goal.
St. Mary's dominated the game from start to finish, outshooting the Green Terror (0-1) by a 17-6 margin and posting a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) picked up her fourth career shutout as Wirtz made four saves.
The Seahawks return to action on Labor Day Monday, September 5 when St. Mary's travels to Ashland, Va. to take on Randolph-Macon College in non-conference action at 4:15 pm.
