St. Mary's Field Hockey Flies Past Goucher as Parker Sets Record

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior forward Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) became the school's all-time scoring leader as the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team exploded for six goals in a 6-1 rout of Goucher College in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.

Parker set the all-time goals record with her two-goal, one-assist performance today, breaking the mark set by Marianne Wood '08 by two goals as Parker increased her career total to 37 goals.  She broke the school's points record on September 16 with six points in a 5-0 win at Hood College, surpassing Wood's 81 career points.  Parker now has 87 points on 37 goals and 13 assists.

Senior midfielder Susan Smith (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's County) started the scoring early for the Seahawks (3-4) as Parker sent a cross to the far post and Smith deflected it in for her first tally of the season at 6:24.  First-year forward Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) continued the scoring with her third goal of the year at 23:38 as Decker put in a loose ball during a scramble following a penalty corner.

Less than six minutes later, Parker became the program's scoring leader with her fifth score of the season as she fired in Smith's pass into the lower left corner.  Sophomore midfielder Rachel Heiss (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) blasted a diagonal pass to the far post where first-year midfielder Daniella Hanacek (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) was waiting to tip it in to give St. Mary's a 4-0 lead at halftime.

Parker tallied her second goal of the day at 45:30 as she dribbled across the goal and then took a reverse shot into the lower left corner.  First-year midfielder Olivia Edwards (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) picked up her first collegiate goal at 54:32 off an assist by sophomore midfielder Gabby Collins (Arnold, Md./Broadneck).

Goucher (4-2) avoided the shutout with a goal at 62:05 as first-year Justine Ruhlin (Cornish, Maine/Sacopee Valley) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season off an assist by junior Lindsay Jones (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School).

Seahawk goalkeepers Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg), Ana Wash (Yorktown, Va./York) and Kelly Shuman (Columbia, Md./Atholton) all spent time in goal.  Shuman made one save in the final 15:28 of the game.

The Seahawks outshot Goucher, 13-3, and posted a 12-3 penalty corner margin.

St. Mary's will return to action on Saturday, September 24 when the Seahawks travel to the Eastern Shore to take on top-ranked Salisbury University (7-0) in Capital Athletic Conference action at 1:00 pm.
