Box Score York, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team used a balance attack to record third shutout victory of the season and hand York College of Pennsylvania its second consecutive setback as the Seahawks left York's Charles Wolf Gym with a 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference victory, recording scores of 25-18, 25-18, 25-18.
The St. Mary's attack was led by senior middle blocker Gena Hlavinka (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton), junior outside hitter Cecilia Blanc (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville), and sophomore Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) as the trio tallied eight kills each.
Klima sparked an 8-1 run to break open a 5-5 first set and give the Seahawks (4-12, 1-3 CAC) their largest lead of the game. York (10-8, 2-2 CAC) closed the gap to 13-11 before St. Mary's closed out the set on a 12-7 spurt for the 25-18 first set victory. Klima (4 kills) and Blanc combined for seven kills while Blanc finished with 12 digs.
In the second set, Blanc had four kills while Klima and junior right-side hitter Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown) contributed three kills apiece en route to the Seahawks' second straight 25-18 win.
St. Mary's overcame an early 3-1 deficit and used a 14-6 run to claim a 15-9 advantage and the Seahawks never looked back.
Blanc paced the Seahawk defense as well, leading a foursome in notching double-digit digs. Blanc posted a team-best 18 digs while sophomore libero Bianca Livioco (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) added a dozen. Juniors Jenn Rindone (Crofton, Md./Spalding) and Dani Thorne (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) each picked up 11 digs to support the defensive effort.
Sophomore setter Rachel Wilson (Damascus, Md./Damascus) led the team with 17 assists while Thorne completed her first career double-double with a career-best 15 helpers.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, October 1 in conjunction with the Hawktoberfest at Family Weekend festivities as St. Mary's welcomes both Hood College and Gettysburg College to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena. The Seahawks will take on Hood first at 1:00 pm in CAC action before facing Gettysburg in a non-conference match at 5:00 pm.
