St. Mary's Men's Soccer Claims 2-1 Victory in Season Opener

Salisbury, Md. – Alun Oliver '04 made his collegiate coaching debut in style Saturday afternoon as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team overcame a 1-0 deficit and posted a 2-1 non-conference win over Eastern Mennonite University at the Elmer Lord Classic hosted by Salisbury University.  Matthew Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) had a tremendous debut for the Seahawks as well as the first-year forward netted both goals in the win.

St. Mary's (1-0) hopes to continue its winning ways tomorrow when the Seahawks take on PSU-Altoona in the final day action at the Elmer Lord Classic.  Kickoff is at 1:00 pm.  Altoona suffered a 4-1 setback at the hands of Salisbury on Saturday.

Following a scoreless first half, Eastern Mennonite (1-1) found the back of the net just 2:31 into the start of the second half as sophomore forward Caleb Golladay (Mt. Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson) collected a pass from fellow forward Mitchell Leap (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) and put it past sophomore goalkeeper Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's).  Brown ended up finishing the game with three saves for the Seahawks.

Braun evened the game at 1-1 in the 78th minute as he fired in a shot that went off senior keeper Patrick Fox (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) and into the back of the goal.  Braun then gave the lead to the Seahawks in the 87th minute as he scored on EMU's relief keeper.

St. Mary's maintained pressure in the final minutes of the match, earning two corner kicks and holding the Royals to a shot wide right of the goal.

EMU edged the Seahawks 15-10 in shots and 5-4 in corner kicks.
