Box Score Ashland, Va. – Junior midfielder Liza Sitz (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) prevented the match from going into overtime as Sitz found the back of the net with 2:09 left in regulation to lift the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference victory over Randolph-Macon College Monday afternoon.
Sitz picked up her second goal of the season at 87:51 when she struck the ball from just outside the box over the reach of first-year goalkeeper Briana Housekeeper (Nottingham, Pa./Solanco).
The two teams were even in the first half as both squads fired off seven shots. However, Housekeeper and sophomore Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) were brick walls for their respective teams as Housekeeper made seven first-half saves and Wirtz tallied five stops for the Seahawks.
The St. Mary's defense really stifled the Randolph-Macon attack in the second half, holding R-MC to just two shots.
St. Mary's (2-0) finished the contest with a 13-9 advantage in shots while the Yellow Jackets (0-2) held a 4-3 corner kick margin.
Wirtz recorded her second shutout of the season with seven total saves.
The Seahawks return to action on Saturday, September 10 when St. Mary's welcomes Gettysburg College to Seahawk Stadium for non-conference action at 12:00 pm.
