Box Score Chestertown, Md. – In what has been a trend between the St. Mary's College of Maryland and Washington College field hockey programs, another one-goal game was decided Thursday afternoon at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. This time, the Washington Shorewomen came out on top with a 2-1 triumph in non-conference action.
In the last four meetings, including today's contest, the victor has come away with a one-goal win and three of those decisions were in overtime. Washington (1-2) won today and in penalty strokes in 2008 while the Seahawks (1-2) had won two straight in 2009 and 2010.
St. Mary's struck first at 12:09 as junior forward Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) blasted one in off a feed from fellow forward, senior Susan Smith (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's County). The game headed into intermission as a 1-1 draw as Washington scored at 20:33.
The Shorewomen claimed a one-goal advantage at the 58-minute mark and clung to that lead as the Washington defense shutdown the Seahawks in the final 12 minutes, holding them to no shots. The hosts finished with 26 shots and 14 penalty corners while St. Mary's took seven shots and earned three corners.
First-year goalie Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) tallied a season-best nine saves for the Seahawks while junior defender Ali McIntosh (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) recorded her first career defensive save.
St. Mary's (1-2) will return to action Saturday, September 10 as the Seahawks travel to Doylestown, Pa. to take on Delaware Valley College (1-2) in non-conference action at 2:00 pm.
