Seahawk Women's Basketball Falls to Marymount (Va.)

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – Despite junior forward Joanna Murray (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) and sophomore guard Raven Owens (Arnold, Md./Severn School) combining for a season-high nine three-point field goals, the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team dropped a 62-52 Capital Athletic Conference decision to Marymount (Va.) University Wednesday evening.

Owens connected on a career-best six three-point field goals (6-of-10) to finish with a game-high 19 points while Murray contributed nine points and career-highs of three assists and two blocks.  Sophomore forward Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) also tallied double-digit scoring with 11.

As a team, the Seahawks (4-9, 2-2 CAC) shot a season-best 42.9-percent from downtown, including a blistering 55.6-percent (5-of-9) in the second half.

Other St. Mary's highlights included sophomore center Myeisha Wallace's (West River, Md./Southern Senior) career-highs of nine rebounds and three blocks as well as junior captain Jasmine Jones' (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) career-best 12 assists.  Plus the St. Mary's defense was able to hold the conference's leading scorer, junior guard Katelyn Fischer (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) who averages 17.6 points per game, to just seven this evening.

Lewis capped an 8-4 start for the Seahawks with a layup at 15:54 for the home team's biggest lead of the game.  Marymount responded with a 14-3 run that spanned seven minutes and established a seven-point lead with nearly nine minutes left in the half.  St. Mary's used a 5-0 spurt to cut the Saint lead to 18-16 at 6:50 on a Murray three-pointer but the Seahawks would get no closer as Marymount headed into the locker room with a 29-23 halftime advantage.

Murray led all players with nine points while Marymount's senior forward Julie Tomesheski (Howells, N.Y./Minisink Valley) hauled in a first-half eight rebounds.

Marymount (4-9, 2-3 CAC) stymied several Seahawk rallies in the second stanza, including St. Mary's last try which erased a 12-point deficit with a 13-4 run to close the gap to 54-51 with 6:28 left.  Owens sparked and capped the nearly four-minute run with a pair of long-range shots, including back-to-back three-pointers in a 32-second span, to finish with three treys in the run.

The Saints quickly rebuilt an eight-point lead in 1:28 but then neither team scored a field goal for the remaining five minutes of the contest as Marymount closed out the game with a 3-of-4 effort from the free throw line.

St. Mary's continues conference action on Saturday, January 7 as the Seahawks welcome Wesley College (2-7, 1-2 CAC) to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.  Tip-off is set for 2:00 pm.
