Box Score Arlington, Va. – Senior right-side hitter Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown) and first-year middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) each collected 10 kills and combined for 15.0 total blocks as the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team battled Marymount (Va.) University in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday night. The Seahawks succumbed to a 3-2 setback after tying the match with a win in the fourth set.
Mullennix contributed 5.0 total blocks (one solo) and three assists while Goodspeed added a season-best 10.0 total blocks on three solo blocks and season-high seven block assists for her first career double-double (10 kills, 10.0 blocks).
In the fifth and deciding set, Marymount (21-6, 4-0 CAC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead that the Saints would never relinquish. MU increased its margin to 7-2 before St. Mary's went on a 4-1 push to close the gap to 8-6. The Seahawks would get no closer the rest of the way as Marymount notched a 15-10 victory to remain undefeated in league play.
Senior setter Dani Thorne (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) registered her sixth double-double of the season on 19 assists and 13 digs while senior outside hitter Cecilia Blanc (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) tallied 13 digs as well plus eight kills and three service aces.
Marymount posted a 25-20 triumph in the first set as a kill by senior middle hitter Jenn Forbes (Philadelphia, Pa.) sparked an 11-2 run that helped the Saints overcome a 14-13 deficit and stake a 24-16 advantage. Senior outside hitter Jenn Rindone (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) stopped the run with one of her six kills, forcing Marymount to call a timeout. Three consecutive Saint attacking errors pulled St. Mary's within four before a Seahawk service error sealed the win of Marymount.
St. Mary's (11-6, 2-2 CAC) responded in the second set with a 25-21 win. Junior right-side hitter Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) knotted the set at 20-20 while a Blanc ace and another Klima kill gave the Seahawks a 22-20 lead before Marymount called a timeout. Two Saint errors and a kill by Rindone made it a 1-1 match.
The Saints answered in the third with a 25-20 victory to stake a 2-1 match lead. First-year middle hitter Morgan McAlpin (Brookeville, Md.) led the way for the Saints with four kills in the set. The Seahawks cruised in the fourth set, breaking a 9-9 draw with an 11-2 run of their own for a 20-11 advantage as Blanc capped the run with a kill. Marymount pulled within 22-15 before St. Mary's closed it out for a 25-16 triumph to force the fifth set.
Rindone added 11 digs to her six kills while first-year setter Grace Chao (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) notched her second double-double of the season on 16 assists and 10 digs.
Three Saint players finished with double-digit kills as Forbes and junior outside hitter Johanna Hummel (Nokesville, Va.) each tallied 12 while senior Michelle McCormick (Charlotte Hall, Md.) commanded the defensive effort with a match-high 21 digs.
The Seahawks will return to action on Saturday, October 13 as St. Mary's travels to Virginia Beach, Va. for a tri-match at Virginia Wesleyan College. The Seahawks will face Randolph College first at 3:00 pm before squaring off against the host at 5:00 pm.
