Box Score 2 Virginia Beach, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team divided their winnings at a non-conference tri-match hosted by Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks notched a 3-1 victory over Randolph College before dropping a five-set match to Virginia Wesleyan.
Junior right-side hitter Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) paced St. Mary's (12-7) in its win over Randolph (5-19) with a match-high dozen kills plus two assists. The match featured 12 tied scores and 10 lead changes.
The Seahawks dominated the first and fourth sets, posting hitting percentages of .560 and .450, respectively, and making only three errors between those two sets. St. Mary's won the match 25-17, 25-21, 15-25, 25-16.
Senior right-side hitter Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown) added nine kills while senior setter Dani Thorne (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) dished 19 assists and junior libero Bianca Livioco (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) led the way with nine digs.
Five Seahawks finished with double-digit kills in their match against Virginia Wesleyan (17-6) as first-year middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) garnered team-bests of 16 kills and 6.0 total blocks (two solo) in the 3-2 loss.
St. Mary's edged the Marlins 25-23 in the first set before Virginia Wesleyan responded with 25-18 and 27-25 in the next two sets to stake a 2-1 lead in the match. The Seahawks overcame a quick 1-0 deficit and never trailed again in the fourth set, rolling to a 10-5 advantage en route to a 25-16 win.
The Marlins hung on for a 15-13 triumph in the final and deciding set. A service ace by Goodspeed had knotted the game at 12-all before back-to-back kills by senior outside hitter Kala Guy (Fisherville, Va.) gave VWC a 14-12 margin. Mullennix finished off a kill to pull St. Mary's within one before a service error closed out the match.
Mullennix and Klima each ended the match with 11 kills while senior outside hitter Jenn Rindone (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) registered her first double-double of the season with 16 digs and 10 kills. Thorne contributed a career-best 27 assists and nine digs while Livioco added 14 digs.
The Seahawks will return to action on Thursday, October 18 when St. Mary's welcomes York College of Pennsylvania (6-22, 1-3 CAC) for a Capital Athletic Conference match at 7:00 pm.
