Seahawk Field Hockey Wins Shootout at Bridgewater (Va.)

Box Score

Bridgewater, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team returned to the win column Saturday afternoon as the Seahawks grabbed a shootout victory in non-conference action at Bridgewater (Va.) College.

The Seahawks (7-5) missed scoring in their first shootout attempt before first-year defender Ally Dahlen (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) gave her team a 1-0 lead through two rounds of shootout attempts by each side.

Sophomore midfielder Daniella Hanacek (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) notched the eventual game-winning goal with her tally in the third round of shootouts to put St. Mary's ahead 2-0.  The Seahawks missed on their fourth try but a fifth round was not needed as Bridgewater (6-7) faltered on all of its four attempts.

Sophomore goalkeeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) recorded a career-best 12 saves in leading St. Mary's to the victory while first-year defender Ally Dahlen (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) picked up a defensive save in the second half.

In the first half, Bridgewater edged St. Mary's 5-2 in shots as well as 5-2 in penalty corners but Bishop came up with three saves to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard.

The Eagles continued to control the tempo in the second stanza with a 6-1 margin in shots and an identical margin in corners.  Again, Bishop withstood the attack with five stops to force the first of two 15-minute extra periods.

BC fired two shots in the first OT period – one went wide and the other was stopped by Bishop – while the Seahawk defense denied four corners.  It was much of the same in the second extra period with Bishop turning away all three Eagle shots and St. Mary's halting five corners.

Bridgewater finished the 100-minute contest with a 16-3 margin in shots and a 20-3 advantage in penalty corners while junior Jessica Balsano (Sandy Hook, Conn.) made just one stop.

The Seahawks return to action on Saturday, October 13 when St. Mary's travels to Virginia to take on Bridgewater (Va.) College for non-conference action at 2:00 pm.
