St. Mary's Volleyball Sweeps York (Pa.) in CAC Action

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team used a balanced attack in notching a 3-0 blanking of York College of Pennsylvania in Capital Athletic Conference action Thursday night.

Senior right-side hitter Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown) paced the Seahawk attack on the evening with a match-high 11 kills for  a .250 hitting percentage as St. Mary's posted set scores of 25-19, 25-15, 25-14.

The win puts St. Mary's (13-7, 3-2 CAC) in a two-way tie with the University of Mary Washington for third in the conference standings as the CAC regular season wraps up next week.  The 2012 CAC Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament begins October 30 with first round action.

The first set featured 10 tied scores and four lead changes before the Seahawks broke through with an 8-2 run to disrupt a 17-17 tie.  The run was capped by a kill by first-year Karlee Vaillant (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) off an assist from junior right-side hitter Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) for the 25-19.

St. Mary's broke open the second set with an 11-1 run following a 9-8 York lead as the Seahawks capitalized on seven Spartan errors.  Mullennix and sophomore outside hitter Jenahye' Johnson (Randallstown, Md./Seton Keough) paced the team in the 25-15 win with three kills each.

The Seahawks opened up the third and final set with an 8-1 dash and never looked back.  York (6-23, 1-4 CAC) pulled within 16-12 but would get no closer as St. Mary's ended the match with four straight points, sealing the 25-14 win with a Klima kill.

First-year middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) contributed six kills, two service aces and 2.0 total blocks (one solo) while senior outside hitter Jenn Rindone (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding), Klima and Johnson all finished with five kills.  Senior setter Dani Thorne (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) dished 20 assists while senior outside hitter Cecilia Blanc (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) led the way with 11 digs.

Senior outside hitter Dani Mastroieni (Chalfont, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) paced the Spartans with six kills while first-year setter Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) picked up 16 assists.  Senior libero Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) and Mastroieni led the defensive effort with 13 and 10 digs, respectively.

The Seahawks will return to action tomorrow night when St. Mary's travels to Pennsylvania for a non-conference match at Elizabethtown College at 7:00 pm.
