Seahawk Women's Soccer Falls Short against Salisbury

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team battled in their third consecutive one-goal game, and ninth of the season, Saturday afternoon, succumbing to a 1-0 setback to Salisbury University in Capital Athletic Conference play.

After today's results, the bracket for the 2012 CAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament was set.  St. Mary's garnered the No. 5 seed and will now travel to No. 4 seed University of Mary Washington on Saturday, October 27 for first round action.  Four days ago, the Seahawks dropped a 1-0 decision at Mary Washington during the regular season.

Following a scoreless first half, Salisbury (10-5, 5-1 CAC) picked up the eventual game-winning goal just 45 seconds into the second stanza.  First-year defender Heather Deamond (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) sent in a cross from the right side that bounced off the near post and landed at the feet of senior midfielder Erin Mooney (Lusby, Md./Patuxent).  Mooney quickly found the back of the net for the go-ahead goal.

The Seahawks had strong scoring opportunities in the second stanza, including shots by junior midfielder Yvonne Latour (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) and first-year forward Jess Konecke (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) that were turned away by sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Conrad (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East).

The Sea Gulls edged St. Mary's 9-8 in shots and 2-1 in corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) finished the afternoon with six saves while Conrad collected three stops in notching the team's eighth shutout of the season.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Wednesday, October 24 when St. Mary's welcomes No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan College to Seahawk Stadium for the regular-season finale.  Prior to the start of Wednesday's match, the team's five seniors – Amy Brakebill, Tori Eskay, Kim LaBarge, Liza Sitz, and Virginia Williams – will be recognized for their years on the Seahawk women's soccer team.
