St. Mary's Volleyball Sweeps Franklin & Marshall Tri-Match

Lancaster, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team extended their win streak to four matches as the Seahawks won both at the non-conference tri-match hosted by Franklin & Marshall College Saturday afternoon.  St. Mary's posted a 3-1 win over Washington College before outlasting Franklin & Marshall, 3-2.

The Seahawks (16-7) dropped the first set to Washington (11-14), 25-21, then cruised to 25-16, 25-14, 25-22 victories for the 3-1 match win.  Junior right-side hitter Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) paced the team in the win with a match-high 14 kills and a .312 hitting percentage while first-year middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) contributed 12 kills for  a .524 hitting percentage.

Junior libero Bianca Livioco (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) continued her strong defensive play with a match-high 18 digs while senior right-side hitter Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown) added five block assists and eight kills.  Senior outside hitter Jenn Rindone (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) tallied 15 kills and five kills while first-year setter Grace Chao (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) notched her fourth double-double of the season on 17 assists and 11 digs.

In its match with Franklin & Marshall (15-13), St. Mary's fell 25-13 in the first set before staking 25-18 and 25-22 wins in the next two sets.  The fourth set had five tied scores and one lead change as the Diplomats claimed a 25-20 win after using a 13-7 run to break a 7-7 knotted score.

Klima sparked a quick 6-3 Seahawk run with her kill to break a 4-4 stalemate and give her squad the lead for good.  Franklin & Marshall could get no closer than a two-point gap before closed out the set with a 15-11 triumph.

Goodspeed led the team in the win over F&M with 15 kills and 5.0 total blocks (four block assists) while Mullennix picked up 14 kills and three block assists.

Defensively, senior outside hitter Cecilia Blanc (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) set the pace with 15 digs while Livioco notched 14 and Rindone added 13 as well as seven kills.

Senior setter Dani Thorne (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) and Chao combined for 44 assists with Thorne dishing 24.

The Seahawks will return to action on Tuesday, October 23 as St. Mary's wraps up Capital Athletic Conference action at Frostburg State University with a match at 5:00 pm.
