Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team notched the fifth seed in the upcoming 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Field Hockey Championship Tournament as the Seahawks dropped a 1-0 decision to York College of Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon, dampening the mood of St. Mary's Senior Day.
With today's win, York (9-7, 2-3 CAC) secured the No. 4 seed in the CAC Tournament which begins Sunday, October 28 with first round action. As the fifth seed, the Seahawks will now travel to York to hopefully extend their 2012 campaign next Sunday.
Following a scoreless first half, the Spartans clinched the eventual game-winning goal at 53:39. Junior forward Madi Wilt (Harwood, Md./Kent Island) sent in a shot towards the far post where sophomore midfielder Nancy Saylor (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) was waiting to slap it in for her second tally of the season.
York posted a 20-10 shot advantage and a 16-4 margin in penalty corners in picking up its ninth win of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) finished with eight saves on the day for the Seahawks (7-7, 1-4 CAC) while senior defender Ali McIntosh (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) picked up her fourth defensive save of the season. First-year Abby Baker (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) collected four stops in her second shutout of the year.
Prior to the start of today's contest, the team's five Seahawk seniors – McIntosh, midfielder Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), defender Katie Wisniewski (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall), forward Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg), and midfielder Amy Eaton (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) – were recognized for their time with the St. Mary's field hockey program.
