Box Score Frostburg, Md. – First-year middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) was the only player in Tuesday evening's match to notch double-digit kills as the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team swept host Frostburg State University, 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-23), in Capital Athletic Conference action.
St. Mary's (17-7, 4-2 CAC) win today keeps the Seahawks third in the conference standings with the 2012 CAC Volleyball Championship Tournament beginning Tuesday, October 30 with first round action. The final seeding will be set tomorrow night after the completion of the Marymount (Va.) University at Salisbury University match.
Goodspeed led all players with 11 kills and a .429 hitting percentage while senior setter Dani Thorne (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams), this week's CAC Co-Player of the Week, collected her eighth double-double of the season with 19 assists and 10 digs.
The Seahawks rolled in the first set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. Frostburg State (5-25, 2-4 CAC) closed to within 5-4 but the Bobcats never claimed a lead in the set. Goodspeed notched four kills in the first game while senior outside hitter Cecilia Blanc (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) added three kills and one service ace.
Frostburg's only lead was a 1-0 margin to start the second set. St. Mary's tied it up and then took over the lead behind consecutive Bobcat errors. The Seahawks never relinquished their advantage and ran off to an 18-11 margin en route to the 25-17 win. Goodspeed picked up five kills while Blanc and Thorne each served up two aces.
The last set featured five tied scores and four lead changes. The final lead change resulted when the Seahawks used a 7-0 run to overcome an 18-15 deficit. St. Mary's held on to the lead despite the Bobcats pulling within one twice, including being within 24-23. The kill that sealed the Seahawk win came from an unlikely source as junior libero Bianca Livioco (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) laid down the winning spike.
Senior outside hitter Jenn Rindone (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) commanded the defensive effort for the Seahawks with 15 digs while Livioco contributed 11 digs as well as the match-winning kill.
The Seahawks have a big weekend coming up as St. Mary's hosts its annual Seahawk Invitational on October 26-27. The tournament will feature Hollins University, Lycoming College, Randolph College, and Stevenson University.
