Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan College used a pair of second-half goals to post a 2-0 non-conference victory over the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team Wednesday afternoon on Senior Day.
Prior to the start of today's match, St. Mary's five seniors – defender Amy Brakebill (Woodsboro, Md./Walkersville), forward Tori Eskay (Damascus, Md./Urbana), forward Kim LaBarge (Gambrills, Md./South River), defender Liza Sitz (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) and midfielder Virginia Williams (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) – were recognized for their time with the Seahawk women's soccer program.
St. Mary's (5-9-1) battled Virginia Wesleyan (17-0-1) tough in the first half, keeping the nation's fourth-ranked scoring offense off the board for 45 minutes. Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) came up with five first-half saves on nine shots faced while the Seahawk defense broke up two corner kicks.
Following the scoreless first half, the Marlins finally broke through at 49:05 when senior forward Jessica Edelman (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) sent the ball towards the far post where sophomore midfielder Kristen Mack (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) touched it in for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 Marlin lead.
Edelman then picked up her team-leading 11th goal of the season just over four minutes later, finishing a cross from senior forward Breanne Ingargiola (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) for the 2-0 final.
Virginia Wesleyan, who is tied for first in the South Atlantic region, posted a 19-2 shot advantage while owning a 9-2 corner kick margin.
Wirtz ended the afternoon with 10 stops while first-year Mackenzie McGurgan (Conway, Pa./Freedom Area) turned away one shot for the team's 12th shutout win.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, October 27 when St. Mary's travels to Fredericksburg, Virginia to take on the University of Mary Washington in the first round of the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament. Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm.
