Box Score York, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team used two second half goals to eliminate fourth-seeded York College of Pennsylvania from the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Field Hockey Championship Tournament, posting a 2-0 victory over York Saturday afternoon in first round action.
With today's win, St. Mary's (8-7) now advances to a semifinal matchup at No. 1 seed University of Mary Washington on Wednesday, October 31. The victory also avenges the Seahawks' 1-0 regular-season finale loss to York last Saturday.
The first half was evenly matched between the Seahawks and York with St. Mary's owning an 11-9 edge in shots while the Spartans posted a 9-5 margin in penalty corners. Both goalkeepers did an outstanding job in keeping the other team off the scoreboard for the first 35 minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) notched five first-half saves for St. Mary's while first-year Abby Baker (Baltimore, Md.) came up with six stops.
Following the scoreless first half, the Seahawks finally broke through the York defense as sophomore Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) shot from the right side for her fourth goal of the season at 44:08 after collecting a pass from senior forward Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg).
Parker added an insurance goal for St. Mary's at 66:28 with her team-leading fifth tally of the season as she took a feed off the stick of junior forward Gabby Collins (Arnold, Md./Broadneck).
York (10-8) collected seven penalty corners in the second half but could not find the back of the cage as Bishop made three stops and first-year defender Ally Dahlen (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) added a defensive save.
St. Mary's edged the Spartans, 15-14, in shots while York registered a 16-7 advantage in corners.
Bishop finished the afternoon with seven saves for her third shutout of the season while Baker ended with six stops.
