Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Four different Seahawks found the back of the cage as the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team posted a 4-1 victory over Frostburg State University for their first Capital Athletic Conference win of the season.
St. Mary's (6-4, 1-2 CAC) claimed a 1-0 lead at 6:09 on a penalty corner. Sophomore forward Olivia Edwards (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) put the ball into play to first-year defender Ally Dahlen (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) who then sent a flat pass to junior midfielder Claire Kortyna (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) for the goal.
Junior forward Gabby Collins (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) gave the Seahawks a 2-0 halftime lead as Collins put back the rebound from junior defender Tori Suess' (Milton, Del./Sussex Tech) defensive save at 30:29.
The Seahawks staked a 3-0 margin at 47:35 as sophomore midfielder Rachel Natoli (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) collected her first career goal.
Frostburg State (5-10, 0-3 CAC) avoided the shutout as junior midfielder Amanda Lennon (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone) snuck in a loose ball past sophomore goalkeeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) at 57:37.
Edwards finished the game with a goal and an assist as she notched an insurance goal at 58:58, deflecting in senior forward Lauriann Parker's (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) laser of a shot at the near post.
St. Mary's owned a 22-10 shot advantage while edging the Bobcats 7-5 in penalty corners.
Bishop registered three saves in 48 minutes of action while first-year Shannon Flanagan (Crofton, Md./South River) added a stop in relief. Senior Maggie Edwards (Lebanon, N.J./Hunterdon Regional) picked up 11 stops in the loss while Suess finished with two defensive saves and senior defender Heather Gray (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) tallied one as well.
The Seahawks return to action on Thursday, October 11 when St. Mary's welcomes Shenandoah University to Seahawk Stadium for a non-conference match-up at 4:00 pm.
