Seahawk Volleyball Sweeps Wesley in CAC Opener

Dover, Del. – First-year middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) was the only Seahawk to register double digit kills as the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team easily posted a 3-0 victory over host Wesley College in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both squads.

Goodspeed tallied 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage to pace the offense while junior right-side hitter Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) added eight kills and a .538 attack percentage.

First-year setter Grace Chao (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) helped the Seahawks (4-1, 1-0 CAC) break a 16-16 deadlock in the first set en route to a 25-19 victory as Chao served seven straight points, including three aces.  Klima finished off the set with a kill off a Chao assist.

The St. Mary's defense was paced by 3.0 blocks from first-year middle hitter Karlee Vaillant (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and 2.5 blocks from Goodspeed while junior libero Bianca Livioco (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) registered six digs.

In the second set, Wesley (2-8, 0-1 CAC) was held to a .000 hitting percentage while the Seahawks closed out the game on a 16-2 run to break the 9-9 stalemate and record a 25-11 triumph in the set.

Chao and senior setter Dani Thorne (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) combined for 23 assists to help out the attack while Chao served up three aces and Vaillant and senior outside hitter Jenn Rindone (Crofton, Md./Spalding) each had two.

The final set came down to another big Seahawk run as St. Mary's finished the match on a 16-9 run.  Goodspeed notched the final point of the match with her 10th kill off a Chao assist.

The Wolverines were paced in the loss by junior middle hitter Lindsay DiMuzio (Wilmington, Del.) who finished the match with eight kills, seven digs and two aces.  Junior setter Cristina Marruffo (Tulsa, Okla.) dished 22 assists while first-year libero Megan Marshall (Wilmington, Del.) added 13 digs.

The Seahawks will be back in action this weekend, September 14-15, at the Knights Invitational hosted by Neumann College in Aston, Pa.  St. Mary's opens up the invitational Friday night against the host at 6:30 pm followed by a match against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford at 8:30 pm.
