St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomore Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) notched the game-winning goal and sophomore goalkeeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) denied two penalty strokes to give the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team a 1-0 non-conference win over the Washington College Shorewomen Wednesday afternoon.

In 10 meetings between the two programs, eight have been decided by one goal and of those eight, four were contested in overtime.  St. Mary's (4-1) now owns a 7-3 record in the series history with Washington. 

Decker fired off an initial shot that junior goalie Stephanie Harryman (Churchton, Md.) saved but Decker followed her shot and put back her own rebound for a 1-0 Seahawk lead nearly 10 minutes into the first half.

Harryman held off the Seahawk attack for the remainder of the first half with three stops while seniors Erin Lewns (Fallston, Md.) and Hillary Kane (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) each picked up a defensive save.

Bishop and Harryman each turned away a penalty stroke attempt in the first half.  Harryman turned back senior forward Lauriann Parker's (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) stroke attempt at 2:10 to keep St. Mary's off the scoreboard before Bishop refused senior midfielder Hilary Manion's (Trappe, Pa.) stroke attempt with 2:04 remaining in the half.

The Shorewomen (2-3) peppered Bishop in the second stanza as Washington tallied a 7-2 margin in shots.  Bishop picked up another three saves, including stopping another Washington penalty stroke at 47:18, to preserve the 1-0 Seahawk victory.

Washington dominated the statistics with a 13-8 edge in shots and a 10-4 margin in penalty corners.

Bishop finished the afternoon with six saves to record her first shutout of the season while Harryman made four stops in the loss.

The Seahawks return to action this Saturday, September 15 when St. Mary's welcomes Eastern Mennonite University to Seahawk Stadium for non-conference action at 12:30 pm on National Field Hockey Day.
