Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss Saturday afternoon at the hands of non-conference opponent, Eastern Mennonite University. EMU notched the game-winning goal within the last five minutes of regulation.
Sophomore forward Michelle Zook's (Allensville, Pa.) third goal of the season proved to be the eventual game-winner. Zook put in the rebound of a shot that hit the post to lift the Royals (1-4) to their first win of the season at 65:11.
The teams were even in the first half as Eastern Mennonite edged St. Mary's (4-2), 5-3, in shots while the Seahawks owned a 2-0 margin in penalty corners to head into halftime in a scoreless draw.
St. Mary's dominated the action in the second stanza with an 11-5 shot advantage but first-year goalkeeper Sam Ferrier (Sellersville, Va.), who came in at the start of the second half, turned away seven shots to keep the Seahawks off the scoreboard.
Sophomore goalkeeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) made no saves in the contest as the Royals' only shot on goal came on Zook's goal. Junior Mary Beth Danaher (Matoaca, Va.) started the game for EMU and made one stop before being relieved by Ferrier at halftime.
The Seahawks will look to return to the win column on Tuesday, September 18 when St. Mary's travels to Towson to take on Goucher College in non-conference action at 4:00 pm.
