Seahawk Men's Soccer Earns CAC Victory over Wesley

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer (3-6, 1-1 CAC) rallied with two unanswered goals to defeat Capital Athletic Conference foe, Wesley College (1-5-2, 0-2-0 CAC), Saturday afternoon at Seahawk Stadium by a 2-1 count, snapping a five-game skid.

In what might prove to be a critical game for CAC playoff positioning, the Seahawks overcame an early second-half goal by the Wolverines to earn its first conference win of the season.

The teams played to a scoreless draw through the first 45 minutes of action with each team getting off four shots.

Wesley would get on the board first just 4:22 into the second half as first-year Paul Grant Jr. (Lawrenceville, N.J./ Lawrence) found the back of net off a pass from sophomore Aris Reynoso (Laurel, Del./Sussex Technical).

St. Mary's would regroup quickly, dominating possession over the next ten minutes of action and finally connecting on the 1-1 equalizer at 59:01 when first-year Davis Holland (Cape Carteret, N.C./Leonardtown [Md.]) scored off a cross from sophomore Rickie Kalama (Bel Air, Md./Aberdeen).

Wesley and St. Mary's traded opportunities from this point on but it would be the Seahawks who would convert.  In the 80th minute off a long throw in from Holland, senior Ryan Plaisance (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) unleashed a rocket from 25 yards and scored high over the outstretched hand of the Wesley goalkeeper, giving St. Mary's a 2-1 advantage and what would prove to be the game-winning goal.

St. Mary's and Wesley finished the match with 11 total shots apiece, with the Wolverines holding a 3-1 corner kick advantage.

Junior goalie Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School for Boys) finished with four saves in goal, while Wesley junior Mark Mattern (Carney, Md./Kenwood) finished with three saves.

St. Mary's will return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 26 when the team travels to future CAC opponent, Christopher Newport University, in Newport News, Virginia for a non-conference match slated for 7:00 pm.
