Box Score Newport News, Va. – Senior midfielder Frank VanGessel (Delmar, Del./Delmar) scored the lone Seahawk goal as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team dropped a 5-1 non-conference decision to regionally-ranked Christopher Newport University Wednesday night.
Christopher Newport (6-1-2), who is ranked eighth in the South Atlantic poll, claimed an early 1-0 lead at 3:56 on an own goal. The Captains staked a 2-0 margin at 13:09 as sophomore midfielder Jalon Brown (Yorktown, Va.) beat junior goalkeeper Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School) one-on-one.
VanGessel pulled the Seahawks (3-7) within one at 27:16 as sophomore midfielder Rickie Kalama (Bel Air, Md./Aberdeen) sent a through ball from left to right for VanGessel to one-touch a lofted ball over junior Sean Killion (Crofton, Md.).
CNU headed into halftime with a 2-1 lead and a 12-3 shot advantage.
Brown struck again in the second stanza at 50:48 to extend the margin to 3-1 before junior midfielder Caleb Lewis (Mechanicsville, Va.) made it a 4-1 contest at 59:04. Junior forward Jack Cooper (Blacksburg, Va.) netted the final goal of the match at 83:38.
The Captains posted a 26-6 shot margin for the game while owning a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.
Junior goalie Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School for Boys) picked up eight saves in 87 minutes of action while sophomore Nate Ramsland (Catonsville, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) added an additional save in relief.
St. Mary's will return to the pitch on Monday, October 1 when the Seahawks travel to Virginia to take on Ferrum College in non-conference action at 4:00 pm.
