Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – First-year middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) paced the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team in their 3-0 non-conference sweep of Goucher College Wednesday night.
Goodspeed finished the evening with 10 kills and a .333 hitting percentage in leading St. Mary's (9-4) to tonight's victory.
Senior outside hitter Jenn Rindone (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) served nine straight points to help St. Mary's (9-4) to a 10-0 advantage in the first set. Goucher (4-12) pulled within 13-7 on a Seahawk attacking error. St. Mary's closed out the set on a 12-8 run en route to a 25-15 win.
The Seahawks were consistent in winning the second set by a 25-15 score as well. The hosts overcame an early 3-0 deficit but the set featured three tied scores and three lead changes. St. Mary's claimed the lead for good following three consecutive Gopher attacking errors to break a 6-6 draw. Goucher came within 17-14 on a kill by first-year setter Sarah Johnson (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) before the Seahawks finished on an 8-1 run.
The final set was played tighter by both sides with seven tied scores and five lead changes. The Gophers owned a 13-10 lead on a kill by junior Tori Rain (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) before St. Mary's utilized a 6-2 run to take the lead for good at 16-15 and head to a 25-21 triumph.
Three Seahawks notched double-digit digs in the defensive effort. Rindone led the way with 17 digs while senior outside hitter Cecilia Blanc (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) added 12 and senior setter Dani Thorne (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) had 11.
Thorne collected her fourth double-double of the season with a match-high 19 assists while Rindone served up a career-best six aces.
Junior outside hitter Megan Chalk (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) paced the Gopher attack with 11 kills while Rain ended with 14 digs. Johnson dished 19 assists in helping the offense.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, September 29 when St. Mary's travels to Chester, Pennsylvania for a tri-match at Widener University. The Seahawks will face DeSales University at noon and then take on Widener at 2:00 pm.
