St. Mary's Field Hockey Drops Heartbreaker at Wesley

Box Score

Dover, Del. – Junior midfielder Madison Leone (Dover, Del.) gave Wesley College the double overtime win over the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team Friday night, posting a 2-1 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the Seahawks.

Leone backhanded a shot into the lower right corner at 88:53, ending the contest nearly four minutes into the start of the second extra period.  Leone finished the night with three points on a goal and an assist.

St. Mary's (5-4, 0-2 CAC) is still looking for its first conference win despite putting up a strong fight tonight.  The Seahawks are now 3-2 in one-goal contests this season.  Junior midfielder Rachel Heiss (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) helped the Seahawks strike an early lead in the first half as Heiss completed a feed from senior forward Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) for her second goal of the season at 28:05.

The Seahawk lead lasted for seven minutes as sophomore forward Lauren Mears (Princess Anne, Md.) hooked up with Leone for the equalizer right as the first half horn sounded.

Wesley (6-4, 2-0 CAC) controlled the tempo of the game with a 14-9 shot advantage, including a 2-0 edge in the second overtime stanza.  The Wolverines also dominated penalty corners with a 16-6 margin, including a 9-3 advantage in the first period.

The best opportunities for St. Mary's to stake its first league victory arose in the second half when all three Seahawk shots were on target.  However, senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Groom (Bear, Del.) was there to deny every attempt.

Sophomore keeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) posted five saves for the Seahawks in the game while senior defender Ali McIntosh (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) picked up her third defensive save of the season.  Groom ended the night with her three second-half saves.

The Seahawks return to action on Tuesday, October 2 when St. Mary's welcomes Shenandoah University to Seahawk Stadium for a non-conference match-up at 4:00 pm.
