Box Score 2 Chester, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team continued their strong play Saturday afternoon at a non-conference tri-match hosted by Widener University. The Seahawks (10-5) began the day with a 3-0 win over DeSales University before succumbing to a five-set loss to the hosts.
First-year middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) commanded the attack for St. Mary's, amassing 32 kills against only two errors for a .577 hitting percentage in two matches. Goodspeed added 14.0 total blocks and four service aces as well, averaging 5.81 points per set.
The Seahawks picked up the sweep of DeSales (9-12) with scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-20. As a team, St. Mary's hit .308 for the match, including a .470 attack percentage in the third and final set. Goodspeed was the only player with double-digit kills as she finished the match with 13 kills and a .619 hitting percentage while adding two aces.
Three players tacked on double-digit digs as senior outside hitter Cecilia Blanc (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) led the way with 13 while fellow classmate Jenn Rindone (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) contributed a dozen. Junior libero Bianca Livioco (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) tallied 11. Goodspeed helped out defensively with 7.0 total blocks (four solo).
In the Widener (10-11) match, Goodspeed and first-year Karlee Vaillant (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) both ended the match with double-digit kills and hitting percentages over .300. Goodspeed came away with a match- and season-high 19 kills and .548 percentage while Vaillant notched a season-best dozen and a .381 attack percentage.
Livioco paced the Seahawk defensive effort with a season-high 23 digs while Rindone tallied 18 as well as six kills. Blanc had 11 digs and added nine kills while Goodspeed blocked three attempts on her own and aided on four others.
Senior setter Dani Thorne (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) completed the day with 45 assists, including a career-high 27 helpers in the Widener match. First-year Grace Chao (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) notched 36 assists, including season-high 21 against Widener.
The Seahawks return to Capital Athletic Conference action on Tuesday, October 2 as St. Mary's welcomes University of Mary Washington to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for a match at 7:00 pm.
