Box Score 2 St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team notched a pair of non-conference victories in their home-opening tri-match Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks (3-1) posted sweeps of Ferrum College and future Capital Athletic Conference opponent, Penn State Harrisburg.
St. Mary's rolled to a 3-0 win over Ferrum (1-3) behind seven kills by first-year middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton). Goodspeed also added three digs, three block assists, and two service aces in helping the Seahawks roll to 25-11, 25-13, 25-17 set victories.
The team's strongest set was the second when the Seahawks hit .500 on 12 kills with two errors in 20 attempts. Senior outside hitter Jenn Rindone (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led the defensive charge with eight digs while senior setter Dani Thorne (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) dished 19 assists.
Ferrum was led by seven kills and a .353 hitting percentage from first-year outside hitter Brittany Jacobs (Rocky Mount, Va./Franklin County).
Junior right-side hitter Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) led a balanced attack in the Seahawks' 3-0 triumph over Penn State Harrisburg (0-7). Klima finished the match with eight kills while Goodspeed added six.
First-years Emlyn Hammer (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) and Jenny Staab (Cockeysville, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) and sophomore transfer Jenahye' Johnson (Randallstown, Md./Seton Keough) all collected their first career kills as Seahawks in the win over Penn State Harrisburg.
Thorne and first-year Grace Chao (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) split setting duties with 15 assists each while first-year middle blocker Autumn Fisher (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) picked up eight digs. Thorne served up a career-best five aces and tallied six digs as well.
The Seahawks registered set wins of 25-6, 25-20, 25-16 in their win over Penn State Harrisburg. Hitters Chidere Igwe (W. Orange, N.J./W. Orange) and Olivia Umoren (Quincy, Mass./N. Quincy) led Penn State Harrisburg with three kills each while first-year Melissa Ganz (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) notched 13 digs.
In between matches, Ferrum recorded its first win of the 2012 season with a sweep of Penn State Harrisburg to keep the Lions winless on the year.
The Seahawks will be back in action Wednesday, September 12 when St. Mary's opens up Capital Athletic Conference action at Wesley College. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
