Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team is now 1-1 in five-set matches as the Seahawks (13-2) outlasted Gallaudet University, 3-2, in non-conference action Tuesday night to extend their win streak to six in a row.
Gallaudet (10-8) claimed a 25-20 win in the first set before St. Mary's responded with set scores of 26-24 and 25-21 to stake a 2-1 lead in the match. The Bison regrouped and took the fourth, 25-22, to force the fifth and decisive fifth set. The Seahawks dominated the play in the last game, posting a 15-4 triumph after opening up with an 8-2 advantage before switching sides.
Sophomore middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton), this week's Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week, led the way with 17 kills while sophomore captain Autumn Fisher (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) added 15 and senior captain Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) tallied 11.
At the net, sophomore Karlee Vaillant (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) put up four total blocks (three solo) while Klima chipped in three (two solo). Six Seahawks posted double-digit digs on the defensive side of the ball as first-year Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) paced the team with 35.
First-year Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 21 assists and 20 digs while senior Elaina Straub (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) notched her first double-double of the year with 18 assists and 11 digs. Fisher also registered a double-double on the night, her fourth of the season, as she tallied 18 digs.
The Seahawks will be back in action Thursday, October 3 as St. Mary's travels to Buena Vista, Virginia to face conference newcomer, Southern Virginia University, at 7:00 pm.
