Box Score York, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team is experiencing their first losing skid of the season as the Seahawks (15-5, 1-2 CAC) suffered their second consecutive loss Thursday night, falling 3-1 in Capital Athletic Conference action at York College of Pennsylvania (15-10, 2-1 CAC).
The Seahawks will look to get back in the win column this Saturday, October 19 when St. Mary's travels to Fredericksburg, Virginia to face the University of Mary Washington in another conference match at 3:00 pm.
Sophomore middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) picked up nine kills and three total blocks (2 solo) to pace the Seahawks while senior captain Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) added seven kills and a .375 hitting percentage.
York posted set scores of 25-11, 13-25, 26-24, 25-16 in nabbing its second conference win of the season and rebounding from its 3-1 loss at McDaniel College on October 10.
The Spartans tallied a hitting efficiency of .600 in the first set while St. Mary's registered a negative attack percentage. The Seahawks flipped the tables in the second game, making just one error in collecting an attack efficiency of .500 in comparison to York's .118.
Both sides were even in the third set as York outlasted the Seahawks for a 2-1 lead in the match. St. Mary's attacking output dropped in the final and fourth game, allowing the Spartans to run away with the win.
First-year setter Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) contributed to the offense with 14 assists, five kills and one ace while senior Elaina Straub (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) tallied 10 helpers.
On the defensive side, first-year Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) denied 17 York attacks while Graf and sophomore defensive specialist Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) helped out with seven kills each.
