Box Score Arlington, Va. – Sophomore forward Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) found the back of the net twice in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team to a 4-0 Capital Athletic Conference win over the Marymount (Va.) University Saints Saturday afternoon.
Today's win extends the Seahawks' unbeaten streak to four with a 3-0-1 record during that stretch. Having now won three conference matches in a row, St. Mary's improves to 5-7-3 (4-1 CAC) on the season while now owning a 25-5-2 mark in the series against Marymount (5-8, 2-4 CAC) , including going 8-0-1 in the last nine meetings.
The Seahawks posted a 2-0 halftime advantage behind goals by Sawyer and senior captain Yvonne Latour (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard). Sawyer netted her team-leading third game-winning goal of the season just 3:08 as she put an unassisted tally past first-year goalkeeper April Westmark (Pensacola, Fla.). Latour made it 2-0 at 36:09 with an unassisted score as well.
Sawyer struck early in the second half as she converted a pass from junior midfielder Lexy McCarty (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) at 47:21. Sophomore Jess Konecke (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) gave St. Mary's a four-goal cushion with her team-best sixth goal of the season at 73:39.
The St. Mary's defense held Marymount to just six shots for the game, including only two over the final 45 minutes. Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) and first-year Sara Eaton (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal) joined forces to record the team's fifth shutout of the season. Wirtz had three saves on five shots faced in 81 minutes while Eaton denied the only shot she saw.
Westmark picked up seven stops in the Saints' second straight loss.
St. Mary's will battle Salisbury University in its next conference match on Wednesday, October 23 at 3:30 pm on the Eastern Shore.
