Box Score Fredericksburg, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team is still struggling to find their rhythm within Capital Athletic Conference action as the Seahawks drop a 3-0 decision at the University of Mary Washington Saturday afternoon.
St. Mary's falls to 15-6 (1-3 CAC) on the season after enduring only its third shutout loss of the year as the Seahawks suffer their third straight conference loss. The team hopes to snap their three-match skid on Wednesday, October 23 when St. Mary's hosts conference newcomer, Christopher Newport University, at 7:00 pm in the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.
Sophomore middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) paced the Seahawks in the loss with a match-high 11 kills while sophomore captain Autumn Fisher (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) added eight kills and eight digs.
St. Mary's started with a 3-0 jump and still held the lead at 11-10 before Mary Washington (13-8, 3-1 CAC) went on a 9-2 run to take the lead for good en route to a 25-19 win in the first set. The Seahawks did pull within 21-18 but could not close the gap anymore.
The Seahawks notched the first point of the second set but UMW then put together a 7-0 to claim the lead. St. Mary's fought back and came within 17-15; however, the Eagles closed out the game on an 8-2 spurt for the 2-0 match lead.
The third and final set was tied seven times and the lead changed five times. The Seahawks last stand was a 7-6 advantage before Mary Washington pulled away for the 25-15 win in the third.
First-year setter Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) contributed to the offense with 10 assists while first-year libero Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) collected 14 digs and served up the team's only two aces of the match.
